Flor CrisotomoTwo years ago I was arrested in a raid that destroyed the lives of hundreds of IFCO workers and their families. The raid was part of the campaign of “attrition” through “enforcement only” that is the current wrong-headed policy of this government.

I have exhausted all my legal appeals and I have been ordered out of the country today. I am expected to be one of the flashing yellow warning lights that tells the 12 million undocumented to leave their families and "self-deport."

I am not leaving. I have asked and been granted sanctuary in my church. I am not defying the laws of this country and I am not hiding. I am taking a stand of civil disobedience to Make America See what they are doing. I hope that adding my grain of sand to the struggle will help to get the U.S. Congress to act to fix a broken law and an inhuman system of undocumented labor.

I will not be used as symbol of fear. Instead, I will continue to add my light to others to make America See what they are doing to 12 million human beings and their families.

I hate the system of undocumented labor. It has separated me from my children for seven years. I believe with all my heart that Mexico and the United States together must end this system.

But the current policy of enforcement-only is not ending the system and that is what I want America to see.

I came here seven years ago, following my two brothers, because NAFTA made it impossible to feed my children in my home town in the state of Guerrero. That situation has only gotten worse and the Mexican Congress predicts that with the final reduction of the tariffs on corn, beans, sugar and powdered milk under NAFTA, as many as a million more Mexican out of work farmers will try to make the deadly and dangerous crossing to find work in the United States.

My brother now has family in the United States with U.S. citizen children. He will not leave his children and there are millions like him. Others, with children and families in Mexico, will not go back because the policies of NAFTA make it impossible for them to find work there.

The raids and deportations make them live in fear. The no match letters force them into worse and worse jobs. But, like me, they must send money back to feed their families and a poor job is better than no job.

That is why the current policy will not end the system of undocumented labor: we cannot go home to hungry eyes and we cannot leave our families here.

The combination of NAFTA and Enforcement-Only is not aimed at ending the system of undocumented labor. It is aimed at making it worse for us. It is aimed at our destruction.

I have faith and hope that America will see what they are doing. The Congress can act to legalize those who are currently working with a five year renewable visa that allows them to work, stay together with their families here or at least travel to see them if they are in Mexico.

You can end illegal employment by making the employees legal and holding the employers accountable. You cannot end this terrible system if you do not legalize those whose labor you have used here because you have made it impossible for us to return home.

I have hope that America will see what they are doing and come together with the Mexican Government to renegotiate NAFTA and other financial agreements that have destroyed the economy and way of life of our people in Mexico. Only through this renegotiation of NAFTA and the legalization of employment can the borders be made safe and secure.

Others will follow me at this press conference who will explain the effects of NAFTA and why undocumented immigration is the result of its effects on Mexico. For myself, I want to end with a personal note.

I know that by taking this action there is little chance that I will ever achieve legal status to stay in this country. I may face time in prison. But when I do return to my children, I will not return, as so many have, empty handed and unable to provide for them. I will be able to give them the only thing that I can pass on to them: My dignity.

I am fighting for those who have families here and for those who are separated from their families in Mexico. I am fighting against a cruel and inhuman system of undocumented labor whose human face is the separation of families and the misery of children.

I am one of the indigenous people to whom God first gave this land. We have survived genocide and slavery, forced assimilation and disease. We will survive this monster that the powerful would place on our necks because we will not bow down to it. We will stand with dignity as my brothers and sisters in the north stood at Wounded Knee, until God makes the people see that by destroying us they are destroying their own souls.

Let us build together a movement that will Make America See and make the Congress act. Let us do it without hatred and without violence. Let us do it together.

DECLARACION DE FLOR CRISOSTOMO

Hace dos años fui detenida en una redada que destrozó las vidas de cientos de trabajadores de IFCO y de nuestras familias. La redada fue parte de la campaña de “atrición” por medio de “solamente represión” que forma la actual política malpensada de este gobierno.

He agotado todas mis apelaciones legales y me han ordenado salir del país hoy. el gobierno espera que yo sea una luz amarilla de “advertencia” que diga a los otros 12 millones de indocumentados que deben abandonar a sus familias y auto deportarse.

Desprecio y desapruebo el sistema de mano de obra indocumentada. Que me ha separado de mis hijos por siete años. Creo con todo mi corazón que México y los Estados Unidos deben de terminar con este sistema.

Se que la actual política de represión no va terminar este sistema, y eso es lo que quiero que los Estados Unidos vea.

Vine a este país hace 7 años, siguiendo a mis dos hermanos, el TLCAN hizo imposible que yo diera de comer a mis hijos en mi pueblo; la situación simplemente ha empeorado.

El Congreso mexicano predice que con la eliminación final de los aranceles sobre maíz, fríjol, azúcar y leche en polvo, tal vez un millón mas de agricultores mexicanos intentarán cruzar la frontera para encontrar trabajo en este país, a pesar de los peligros mortales que representa.

Mi hermano ya tiene una familia en los Estados Unidos con hijos ciudadanos norteamericanos, El no acepta abandonar a sus hijos y hay millones como el; otros con familias e hijos en México, no se regresaran porque las políticas del TLCAN hacen imposible que encuentren empleo allá.

A causa de los allanamientos y deportaciones, vivimos atemorizados. Las cartas “no match” nos obligan a aceptar trabajos cada vez peores. Porque como yo, tenemos que enviar remesas para darles de comer a nuestras familias y un trabajo malo es mejor que ninguno.

La combinación del TLCAN con la política de “solo represión” no tiene la meta de acabar con el sistema de mano de obra indocumentada, Porque no le conviene y sabe que nos necesita.

En base a tales políticas el dia de hoy.

No me prestare para que me utilicen como símbolo de miedo. En vez de eso, voy a seguir agregando mi luz de lucha, a las de otros; para que los Norteamericanos y el mundo vean lo que hace, este gobierno a 12 millones de seres humanos y sus familias.

En este momento digo que no me voy. He pedido Santuario a mi pastor y a mi Iglesia y me lo han concedido.

No estoy desafiando las leyes de este país y no me estoy ocultando. Tomo la posición de desobediencia civil para que este gobierno actué
Para que arregle las leyes descompuestas y acabe con el sistema inhumano de mano de obra indocumentada y explotación.

No podemos regresar a casa y ver los ojos hambrientos de los nuestros; y no podemos dejar a nuestras familias aquí.

Tengo fe y esperanza que los Estados Unidos pueda ver lo que están haciendo; y que el Congreso pueda actuar, para legalizar a los que actualmente están trabajando, otorgándoles una visa renovable de 5 años que les permita trabajar, convivir con sus familias aquí o puedan visitar a los suyos haya.

Ustedes si pueden acabar con la mano de obra indocumentada, legalizando a los empleados y entonces obligando a los patrones a cumplir.

No pueden acabar con este temible sistema, si no legalizan a los trabajadores cuya labor han utilizado y han hecho imposible el regreseso a nuestros países de origen.

Tengo la esperanza que los Estados Unidos pueda ver lo que están haciendo y junto con el gobierno mexicano se renegocié el TLCAN y otros pactos comerciales que han destruido la economía y la forma de vida de nuestra gente en México y que nos obliga a emigrar.

Solo por medio de la renegociación del TLCAL y la legalización de la mano de obra se pueden hacer seguras las fronteras.

Otros van a hablar después de mi en esta conferencia de prensa y van a explicar los resultados del TLCAN y porque es que la inmigración indocumentada es el resultado.

Pero quiero terminar con una nota personal.

Soy consiente que por tomar esta acción, hay poca probabilidad de lograr un estatus legal para yo permanecer en este país.
También se que me pueden poner en la cárcel.

Pero cuando regrese a tocar a mis hijos, no regresare como tantas personas; con las manos vacías y sin posibilidades de darles de comer.
Voy a poder transferir a ellos lo único que puedo, mi dignidad.

Estoy luchando para los que tienen familias aquí y para los que se encuentran separados de sus familias en México.
Estoy luchando contra un sistema cruel e inhumano de mano de obra indocumentada cuya cara humana es la separación de las familias y el sufrimiento de los niños.

Soy de las personas indígenas, a las cuales Dios a principios dio esta tierra. Hemos sobrevivido a pesar del genocidio y esclavitud, asimilación forzada y enfermedad.

También sobreviviremos ante este monstruo, que los poderosos pretenden poner sobre nuestros hombros porque no doblaremos la rodilla.

Vamos a pararnos con dignidad como mis hermanos y hermanas se pararon en Wounded Knee, hasta que Dios haga ver a estas personas que cuando nos destruyen; destruyen sus propias almas.

Vamos a trabajar juntos para seguir un movimiento y “hacer que los Estados Unidos vea” y para que el Congreso actúe.

Vamos a hacerlo juntos sin rencor ni violencia y con dignidad.
